The impact of tobacco use on COVID-۱۹ outcomes: A brief review

Background: COVID-۱۹ is an acute respiratory syndrome and a systemic infection that causessignificant complications in different parts of the body, especially in the respiratory parts. Also,tobacco use increases risks for numerous diseases, including respiratory illnesses. The presentstudy was designed to investigate the impact of tobacco use on COVID-۱۹ outcomes.Methods: The present study was a summary review study designed in ۲۰۲۲. To search for similararticles, valid scientific databases such as PubMed / Medline, Scopus and ISI (Web of Sciences)were used. Selected keywords according to the MeSH guidelines included 'COVID-۱۹', ' SARSCOV-۲', 'Tobacco use', 'Smoking' and 'Outcome', which were searched using the AND-ORoperators. Initially, ۲۵ articles were retrieved, and after applying the inclusion and exclusioncriteria, ۱۶ articles were extracted. Inclusion criteria included the availability of the full text of thearticle, Latinness of the article and exclusion criteria also included: abstracts of papers presented atcongresses and conferences.Results: The review of various studies showed that tobacco use was associated with increased riskof hospitalization, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation and illness severity. Some studiesreported tobacco use history increased risk of pulmonary embolism and mortality in COVID-۱۹patients, but some studies showed that there was no significant relationship between COVID-۱۹and tobacco use.Conclusion: Different results showed that there is strong evidence that tobacco use increases risksof mortality, disease severity and progression among COVID-۱۹ patients. Public health effortsduring the pandemic should encourage tobacco users to quit use and seek care early and promotevaccination and other preventive behaviors among those with a history of tobacco use.
