Background: Smoking of water pipe (WP) and cigarettes has recently turned into a major globalhealth burden. According to reports, the prevalence of smoking in Iranian students has anincreasing trend during the study period. The present study aimed at as-sessing and comparing WPand cigarette smoking among Larestan University of Medical Sciences (LARUMS) students andIslamic Azad University Larestan branch students who were studying in non-medical fields.Methods: The target population of this study was all male and female students of Larestan city.۳۰۰ students were selected from different faculties through randomized stratified samplingmethod. The instrument used was the PDUQ questionnaire (Alpha value of ۰.۸۱(. According toOdineski table, the questionnaire was randomly distributed among ۱۴۴ students of medical and۱۵۶ students of non-medical. The collected data was analyzed using Chi-square test, and Pearsoncorrelation coefficient (P<۰.۰۵).Results: The results of data analyses indicated that there was no significant relationship betweenthe field and type of university with cigarette and water pipe smoking. Also, cigarette and waterpipe smoking was observed more in males than females and the difference was statisticallysignificant (P<۰.۰۰۱). Water pipe using was more common among medical students than AzadUniversity But cigarettes smoking was more in non-medical students. The most important reasonof tendency toward and prevalence of cigarette and Water pipe smoking in male students was theirintimate relationship with smoking friends, and in female it was mostly done for recreation andfun.Conclusion: In this study, the prevalence of Water pipe and cigarettes smoking was ۱۷.۱ % inmedical students (۹.۸ % in females), (۳۰.۱ % in non- medical students, (and ۱۲.۲%) in females,respectively, It shows that it is almost similar to other universities of the country. HoldingEducational Programs And Social Interventions At University Level Seem Necessary In Order ToPrevent Cigarette And Water Pipe Smoking. For Example Deputy Of Students And CulturalAffairs And Other Relevant Organizations Should Plan Various Entertainment Programs ForStudents
