چکیده

Background: Oral cancer is the ۱۱th most common cancer in the world, which causes significantmorbidity and mortality in patients, especially when it is detected late in the disease course.xposure to cigarette smoke increases the risk of oral cancer. Unfortunately, around ۲.۷ billioncigarettes are smuggled in Iran annually, according to official statement of Iranian TobaccoCompany (ITC). Cigarette smoke contains many toxic substances that can cause cancer. Tobaccouse is the main cause of preventable deaths worldwide. This systematic review was conducted toinvestigate the relationship between tobacco use and oral cancer.Method: We performed a systematic review of the published literature addressing this issue. Wesearched Pubmed and EMBASE and Google Scholar for studies published in any languge betweenJanuary ۱, ۲۰۱۲, and August ۱, ۲۰۲۲. ۱۰۵۵ references screened, ۲۸ articles were found eligible forinclusion . These included articles assessed the effects of tobacco on oral cancer. Results: ۲۸ studies have been included in our study, all of which show that tobacco consumptionis associated with the risk of oral cancer, especially chewing types. ۱۰ case control studiesassessed the association between smoking/alcohol consumption and the risk of oral cancer. Theresults showed that the simultaneous consumption of these two can greatly increase the risk of oralcancer, the alcohol alone did not produce significant effect. ۵ case control studies show that poororal and dental hygiene either with tobacco use or as an independent factor is also a risk factor. Conclusions: According to most of the reviewed articles, there is a correlation between the use ofvarious types of tobacco products such as cigarettes, tobacco and betel quid chewing with oralcancer. Thus, the more the use of tobacco and betel quid chewing, the greater the risk of oralcancer. Using various tobacco products at the same time as drinking alcohol and not observing oraland dental hygiene greatly increases the risk of oral cancer.
