چکیده

Japan is one of the most successful countries in preserving the identity and localization of modern technology and concepts. Zen is among the most important sects in Japanese religious history, emphasizing the depth of existence based on indirect and uncommon teachings. Considering this ritual and its essential role in traditional Japanese architecture during the period of modernity in this country, artists attempted to continue Zen's life by redefining the main concepts in a new form. Kenzo Tange is one of the architects who, in addition to global success, created architectural work considering Japan's historical and ritual identity, particularly the application of Zen concepts. This study aims to determine how to achieve this process in a number of Tange's architectural designs. The significance of this study refers to examining the use of Zen concepts in Japanese architectural work as a successful example. We can use the process to be implemented in countries with significant historical and civilizational backgrounds, such as Iran. This study seeks to answer the question of whether Kenzo Tange could use Zen concepts appropriately in his architecture and how he performed them. In this paper, the relationship between this ritual and Japanese art was analyzed after a brief definition of Zen ritual and its concepts using library sources. Finally, the characteristics that were proposed for the nature of Zen artwork were separately reviewed and applied in several Kenzo Tange designs. The paper concluded that Tange has been able to use the concepts of Zen in his work successfully, in addition to benefiting from concepts such as asymmetry and naturalness with a form-oriented view and the use of historical elements such as the Zen symbol directly or an accurate interpretation of that form.
