Status of Social Capital and its Relationship with the Success Rate of Smoking Cessation in Patients Referred to the Smoking Cessation Clinic

Background and Objective: Several studies showed the effect of social capital role on smoking cessation. As few scientific studies have been carried out to examine this issue in Iran, the present study examined this issue.Materials and Methods: One hundred eleven smokers admitted to the smoking cessation clinic were included in a prospective cross-sectional study in۲۰۱۹. The data needed was collected using a checklist of demographic characteristics and social capital scale(Bullen,۳۶ questions). Success rate for smoking cessation was determined for each person at ۱, ۳ and ۶ month intervals.Result: Of the ۱۱۱ participants, ۱۰۷ were males (۹۶.۴%) . The mean age of participants was ۴۷.۴۲ ± ۱۲.۶۶ years. The minimum score of social capital in the study was ۶۳ and the maximum was۱۷۲. Of all the patients admitted to the clinic, only ۴۳(۳۸.۷%) completed the number of cessation sessions (at least ۴ sessions) and the rest left the cessation sessions unfinished, with the mean score of social capital having no significant differences between the two groups(۱۰۷.۹۷ ± ۱۷.۹۳, ۱۰۷.۵۸ ± ۱۹.۹۵ in the completed and uncompleted group respectively, pv = ۰.۹۳).Conclusion: Given the lack of a significant relationship between social capital and successful smoking cessation in the study.
