چکیده

The majority of building population in Iran and other developing countries consists of unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings and sometimes confined masonry (CM) buildings. The Iranian seismic standard IS2800 provides some specifications for seismic design and construction of confined and reinforced masonry buildings which all are based on the observed behavior of them during the past destructive earthquakes. In other words, the specifications are merely qualitative. This shows the necessity of assessment of masonry buildings behavior both experimentally and analytically. In such buildings, masonry shear walls are the main earthquake resistant components. Therefore, the IS2800 specifications pertain to the masonry shear walls requirements. This paper deals with the nonlinear seismic behavior of brick masonry walls experimentally and numerically to predict joint cracking and explore the possible failure modes. First, four brick masonry wall specimens (one plain, two confined and one reinforced) based on the IS2800 specifications are constructed and tested experimentally subjected to in-plane combined compressive and shear loading. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of bond (confining) beams in enhancing the in-plane seismic response of URM walls failing in rocking and bed joint sliding mode. Also, the reinforced one shows higher lateral strength, stiffness and ductility in comparison with URM and CM specimens. Complementary, a two dimensional numerical model using the specialized discrete element software UDEC (2004) for the pushover analysis of the specimens is developed, in which large displacements and rotations between blocks are accomplished due to the application of the Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model. Results from the experimental study and numerical modeling are compared which show a good correlation between them.
