A Review on the Additional Usages of Metformin as an Antimicrobial Drug

Background and Aim: Metformin is an advisable, inexpensive drug with manageable side effects that causes a sensible weight loss. this article aims to investigate the pathogenic usages of metformin on several pathogens. Methods: This is a review study conducted in ۱۴۰۰ through an advanced search of reputable scientific databases and websites, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. Keywords used include “Metformin”, “Antimicrobial”, and “Treatment” and articles reviewed from ۲۰۱۷ to ۲۰۲۲. After the initial search, only the title and abstract were examined for relevance to the study objectives, and the unrelated articles were excluded. The articles related to the study were also evaluated through the JBI tool. Results: Studies indicated the efficiency of the drug on multiple pathogens, including Trichinella spiralis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. Metformin administration in humans and mice generated major changes in the gut microbiota compound. Other results regarding the administration of metformin to patients with kidney disease, and diminished anxiety about patient safety in terms of lactic acidosis grow the possibility of broadening metformin’s usage as a treatment of infectious agents. Conclusion: It can be concluded that metformin would play a beneficial role in the therapy for various infectious diseases. In addition to the traditional effects on glucose metabolism, metformin offers antimicrobial benefits in patients with tuberculosis and a wide range of other infections encountered in vitro and in vivo.
