چکیده

Leather trade which has been one of the most important working fields of business until the midst of 20th. century have lost its importance substantially because of labor migration towards iron and steel plant founded in Karabük in 1950’s and because lagging behind the technology in this sector. After this process, 84 leather shops have been abandoned rapidly according to the sources. Fields of business have taken place in different ranks on the inclined topography according to the characteristics. The district of tanning yard which includes leather shops is located at the outmost of city where river unites with canyon. Buildings in here are different from the traditional typology of the city. It is seen that in the planning of buildings in tanning yard district, the process of leatherwork reflects structures functionally. While the ground floors of these structures which are generally duplex are connected to river and formed of single place, upstairs are semi-open. Today it is seen that some of these buildings have been dilapidated or have become unfunctional, some have been converted into houses with methods improper to the function of places. Therefore typology of the spaces and cultural identity are being degenerated day by day and sustainable environment is being destroyed every passing day. In this sense, for the solution of spatial problem of today’s Safranbolu; refunctionalization of tanning yard district which is close to the city centre and has become the wreckage of city having view of an unhealthy place becomes very important. In the process of a new design for the projected work zone to be carried out with this aim; firstly, the development over the typology of existing historical layers of design trends and usage of today’s technology in the sense of sustainable design is regarded to be thought in the scale of structure and detail.In this scope; the characteristics of open, semi-open and close spaces in the district will be explained, how the methods will be used in new designs to be formed in the district will be determined and solution offers will be made about the issue in this sense.
