An Estimation of the Survival Rate of Common Cancers in Khuzestan, Iran During ۲۰۰۹

Introduction: Cancers are one of the most important health priorities of all communities, with regard to the incidence and mortality rate as well as its estimated disease burden. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a planned intervention for prevention and control. In the present study, we determined the survival rate of patients with common cancers in Khuzestan province during ۲۰۰۹.Materials and Methods: The present study is a descriptive-analytic study that investigates the ۵-year survival rate of patients with common cancers in Khuzestan province in ۲۰۰۹. Data analyses were performed with SPSS (version ۱۶) using Kaplan-Meier method and Log Rank methods to estimate the survival rate, and Cox regression method to investigate the relationship between patient survival and gender.Results: A total of ۲۰۹۳ patients with common cancers were registered in Comprehensive Cancer System in ۲۰۰۹. The mean age of patients was ۵۵.۲۲±۱۹.۳ years. Of the patients, ۴۶.۳% (۹۶۹ cases) were male and ۵۳.۷% (۱۱۲۴ cases) were female. The ۵-year survival rate of total patients examined was estimated to be ۶۸.۴%. Survival rate in female patients (۷۲.۹%) was more than males (۶۳.۲%). The lowest ۵-year survival rate was associated with lung cancer (۳۷.۳%) and the highest survival rate was associated with skin cancer (۹۳.۵%).Conclusion: The survival of cancer patients is influenced by factors such as lifestyle, access to health care services, improved patient quality of life, early diagnosis of the disease, etc. Therefore, conducting epidemiological and specific studies are necessary to determine the effects of the aforementioned factors on the survival rate.
