چکیده

Objective: Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a modern s trategyfor treatment of periodontal disease. As the major componentof the GBR process, the use of barrier membranes preventssoft tissue ingrowth into the defect cavity and provides sufficientspace for new bone formation. Beside this barrier role, anideal GBR membrane needs to have os teo-inductive potential.In line with our previous reports on remarkable in vitro os teogeniccapacity of zeolitic imidazolate framework ۸ (ZIF۸) thinlayer, in vivo bone regeneration was evaluated in a rat calvariumdefect model using a ZIF۸-modified polypropylene membrane.Materials and Methods: Mechanical characterization of themembrane revealed reasonable Young modules (۳۵.۳۵ MPa)and flexibility after ZIF۸ coating, which were in the range ofcommercial GBR membranes. Two symmetrical ۵-mm defectswere created in the calvaria of ۸-۱۰-week-old male Wis tar rats.One defect in each animal was randomly covered with pris tinePP or ZIF۸-modified membranes (N=۷ per group), while theother defect left untreated as control. Eight weeks pos t-surgery,animals were sacrificed and bone formation was assessed by H& E s taining and immunohis tological analysis.Results: The results clearly verified the barrier function of bothPP and PP-ZIF۸ membranes in comparison to the uncoveredcontrol defects. Furthermore, some marginal bone formationwas observed in control and PP groups, while the defect areawas almos t filled with new mature bone through the use of PPZIF۸membranes.Conclusion: Getting all together, our findings support the feasibility,safety and effectiveness of PP-ZIF۸ membrane as apromising new approach for improving GBR outcomes, withoutusing biological components.
