An Overview of The Outcomes of Uterine TransplantationProcedures Performed Worldwide

Background: Uterine transplantation (UTx) is a major surgicalinitiative for the treatment of absolute uterine factor infertility(AUFI) and includes the use of both assis ted reproduction andreproductive surgery. This article aims to review the outcomesof uterus transplantation procedures performed in the world.Materials and Methods: In this review s tudy, the PubMed databasewas searched, with no time, language, or location res trictionuntil March ۱, ۲۰۲۲, using the words "uterine transplantation”or "uterus transplantation”. Only peer reviewed originalarticles describing human UTx procedures were included in thes tudy.Results: From ۷۲۰ identified articles, ۳۲ papers were enteredthe s tudy for qualitative review. Based on the results, ۶۳ UTxprocedures were performed worldwide (۸۲.۵% using living donors(LD) and ۱۷.۵% using deceased donors (DD)). Of the ۱۵uterine grafts that were failed, ۷۳.۳% were LD UTX and ۲۶.۷%were DD UTx and ۳۱ live births were recorded (۸۴% were theresult of LD UTX and ۱۶% were the result of DD UTx).Conclusion: Uterine transplantation can give women withAUFI the opportunity to give birth to their biological child. Dueto the small number of UTx procedures performed, especiallyusing a deceased donor, determining the safety and effectivenessof UTx requires more data.
