Background: Polycys tic ovary syndrome (PCOs) is the mos tcommon endocrine disorder in women. Due to the fact thatPCOS s tarts from adolescence, this s tudy was conducted withaim to inves tigate the prevalence of this syndrome and itsphenotypes based on Rotterdam criteria in adolescent girls inMashhad.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional s tudy was performedon ۶۵۰ girls aged ۱۴ to ۱۹ years in public schools ofMashhad in ۲۰۱۸-۲۰۱۹. Sampling was performed as a multistage classified clus ter. After completing the Individual andDemographic Information Ques tionnaire, if they had criteriafor entering the s tudy, a clinical examination was performed toinves tigate the clinical symptoms of hyperandrogenism, includinghirsutism, acne, and hair loss with the male pattern, and ifany of the above symptoms were positive, they were referredfor hormonal tes ts and sonography. The diagnosis of polycys ticovary syndrome and its phenotypes was made based on Rotterdamcriteria. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version۲۲) and Chi-square and Fisher tes ts. P<۰.۰۵ was considered s tatistically significant.Results: Frequency of quadruple phenotypes of polycys ticovary syndrome based on Rotterdam criteria included phenotypeA(clinical hyperandrogenism / biochemis try + polycys ticovary) was found in ۳ people (۷.۷%), phenotype B (mens trualdisorders + clinical hyperandrogenism / biochemis try) in ۱۱(۲۸.۲%), phenotype C (mens trual disorders + polycys tic ovaries)in ۱۴ (۳۵.۹%) and phenotype D (mens trual disorders +clinical hyperandrogenism / biochemis try + polycys tic ovaries)in ۱۱(۲۸.۲%). The overall prevalence of PCOs was ۶.۸% basedon Rotterdam criteria.Conclusion: Due to the prevalence of four phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome and the similarity of symptoms withclinical manifes tations of adolescence, it is better to s tart thediagnosis and treatment of this syndrome from adolescence.
