The Role of Pedagogical Films on Improving Iranian EFL Learners’Listening Skills

چکیده

The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of pedagogical films in improvingIranian EFL learners’ listening skills. The textbook used in the curriculum for theexperimental and the control groups was Top Notch ۱A and ۱B written by Joan Saslow andAllen Asher (۲۰۰۷). populations of the current study was ۷۰ learners who were studying atAdyban English language institute in Ahvaz. Their age ranged between ۱۸ and ۲۰ years old.fifty EFL learners from Adyban Language Institute in Ahvaz were selected. Learners wererandomly divided into experimental (N=۲۵) and control (N=۲۵) groups. The experimentalgroup watched pedagogical films while control group listened to audio CDs of thosefilms.The treatment lasted ten sessions, ۴۵ minutes a session, once a week. “NewInterchange ۱”(Richards, ۲۰۱۳) Objective Placement Test was administrated as pre- andpost-test to check the possible listening improvement between and among the groups. Apaired sample t-test to check the possible effect of pedagogical films on learners’ listeningskills. In an independent sample t-test to check the possible differences betweenexperimental and control groups. The statistical method is done through descriptive andinferential statistics through IBM SPSS version ۱۷. The findings of the study showed thatexperimental group significantly outperformed as compared with control group in theirlistening achievements. However, there were no significant differences between learners’listening skills. The findings of the study suggest that using the pedagogical films canpromote EFL learners’ language ability of listening skills.
