چکیده مقاله:

This study set out to explore the effects of interactional and transactional activities on Willingness to Communicate (WTC). Forty female adult pre-intermediate EFL learners at two language Institutes were selected non-randomly from among different classes. They were given a PET and the results were used to select ۳۰ learners whose scores fall within +/-one standard deviation from the mean. These participants were divided into two groups of ۱۵ learners. They were then given the WTC questionnaire as pretest. After that, one of the groups received interactional activities for ۱۰ sessions in line with Richards (۱۹۹۰) while the other group received transactional activities for ۱۰ sessions in line with Richards (۱۹۹۰). After ۱۰ sessions of treatment, the learners were given the WTC questionnaire as post-test. To investigate the null hypotheses, paired samples t-test as well as ANCOVA were run on the pretest and posttest scores. The findings of statistical analyses indicated that both interactional and transactional activities had significant effects on learners’ WTC. However, there was no significant difference between the effects of interactional and transactional activities on WTC. Based on the findings, EFL teachers may intend to use interactional and transactional activities to improve EFL learners’ WTC.
