Background and Aim : Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are known as foodbornepathogens and are also responsible for epidemics of hemorrhagic colitis (HS) and hemolyticuremic syndrome (HUS), worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypicantibiotic resistance to fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin) in STEC strains isolatedfrom sheep carcasses in Kerman. Methods : In this study ۳۰ STEC isolates were confirmed by conventional PCR methods. Diskdiffusion technique was used to analyze STEC isolates for resistance against enrofloxacin andciprofloxacin. Results : Among ۳۰ STECs, ۹ isolates (۳۰%) and ۲۲ isolates (۷۳.۴%) were resistant to theantibiotics ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin, respectivelyConclusion : The results of this study showed that STEC strains obtained from raw sheep meathave a significant amount of resistance to fluoroquinolones and resistance to enrofloxacin wasmore frequent in comparison with ciprofloxacin. Therefore, these ovine STECs are considered aspotential risk for public health in Kerman.
