Relationship between Bacterial Genital Infections inPregnancy Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background and Aim : Bacterial infections represent one of the most serious infections in theworld, which may bring about consequences such as miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth, andectopic pregnancy in pregnant women. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationshipbetween bacterial infections and pregnancy outcomes through a meta-analysis.Methods : Searching international databases PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Web of Sciences, andEmbase (Elsevier) from January ۲۰۰۰ to December ۲۰۱۸ was performed in this meta-analysisusing appropriate keywords terms to identify related articles. After retrieving articles in thesedatabases, screening was performed based on the title, abstract and full text of the articles, and thefinal related studies were selected and evaluated using the Newcastle Ottawa scale checklist.Results : : The results showed that the risk ratio of preterm delivery in the pregnant women withvaginal infections was ۱.۵۷ (۹۵% CI; ۱.۴۶-۱.۶۷), while the risk ratio of abortion was ۲.۰۲ (۹۵%CI; ۱.۷۲-۲.۳۸).Conclusion : Bacterial infections increase the risk outcomes of pregnancy such as miscarriage,premature birth, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirth, giving rise to unimaginable and irreparablecomplications in the fetus with enormous economic costs.
