چکیده

Background and Aim : Shigella is knows as a major cause of diarrhea and around ۷۰% of all itsinfections occur in children under the age of ۵ years. One of the most concerning aspects ofantibiotic resistance is the emergence and widespread distribution of resistance to β-lactam classdrugs which is induced by the enzyme β-lactamase. Analyzing the distribution of β-lactamase isessential in optimal antibiotic administration and infection control. The current study evaluates thedistribution Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing clinical isolates of shigella ina single health center in Tehran, Iran. Methods : Fifty isolates were identified as shigella using the standard biochemical tests. Theproduction of ESBL was assessed based on the CLSI guideline using ceftazidime and cefotaximeantibiotic discs. In this method, the inhibition zone is evaluated once for the individual antibioticsand once accompanied with clavulanic acid and a ۵≤ increase in inhibition zone diameter in thepresence of clavulanic acid was considered as proof of ESBL production. Results : Based on the test results, ۵۰ percent (۲۵/۵۰ isolates) were confirmed to be ESBLproducing strains. Conclusion : The emergence of ESBL enzymes in shigella strains and isolates can be consideredas a global health risk for both developed and developing countries. As β-lactam class drugs areone of the most used antibiotics in Iran, information about the distribution of ESBL strains is vitalin effective infection treatment and control.
