Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia
(VAP) is the most common cause of infection in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Efficient oral care using antiseptics may reduce the incidence of VAP. Thus, this study is designed to evaluate VAP preventing efficacy of Turmeric
extract solution as an oral antiseptic natural product. Method: A total number of ۱۱۵ admitted patients to the ICU department participated in this quasi-experimental trial and finally ۸۰ intubated patients as two allocated groups of ۴۰ cases were enrolled in the presented study. The case group received Turmeric
extract mouthwash in addition to chlorhexidine and the control group received Chlorhexidine alone. Then, the incidence of VAP was determined using the Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score(CPIS) every three days all through two weeks, and fi,nally the resulting data were statistically analyzed to show how the effectiveness of the new approach. Results: The mean age of all participating patients was ۳۷.۵۸± ۱۲.۷۲. No significant difference was found in the VAP rate in the two groups of Turmeric
and control (۳۵% vs. ۴۰ %, respectively, Pvalue=۰.۶۴۴). Furthermore, there were no statistically significant differences between Turmeric
and control groups in the cases of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) scores and intubationdays as well as the clinical outcomes of patients. Conclusion: Us of Turmeric
extract solution associated with Chlorhexidinedid is not significantly effective in the case of VAP prevention in comparison with Chlorhexidine alone.
