A comparative study on the attitudes of nursing students of Fasa University of Medical Sciences toward prevention of smoking substances through educational and controlling measures

Introduction: There are twelve million People addicted to smoking substances in Iran. They spend ninety billion rials on smoking each day and ۳۲۴۰ billion rials in a year. Every ten second one of those will die. Although the smoking age has decreased, the authorities have not taken preventive and strict measures.Methods: The present study is an analytic descriptive one whose subjects were not chosen randomly. The means of collecting data was a two-part researcher-made questionnaire. Having approved the reliability and validity of the questionnaire, the researchers began collecting the data by asking ۱۲۱ nursing students, boys and girls, taking their final exams to fill on the questionnaires. They were filled out and then they were analyzed through Likert scale. T-test and an SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences).Results: The study covered ۱۲۱ nursing students.۸۸ and ۳۴ students were female(۷۱.۹%) and the male respectively (۲۸.۱%);۳۷ students were students of nursing.(۳۱% );۲۲ the students of Operating Theater (۸۱%) ;۱۱ students of Anesthesia (۹.۱%) ;۲۲ students of Fighting against Diseases (۱۸%); ;۲۲ students of Health (۱۸%); ۶ students of Emergency Cary (۵%) ;and ۱ student of Laboratory Technology (۱%).۹۲ students (۹۲.۵۶%) were single, but ۲۹ were married (۷.۴۴%). On the whole, the students' attitudes toward the two way of prevention indicate that the mean and the standard deviation of the two ways, educational and controlling, were ۲۰.۵ and ۱۸.۲۶ (P=۰/۰۰۱): However, they were ۲۱.۲۷ and ۱۸.۸۲ (p=۰/۰۰۱) for female.Conclusions: The educational measures taken to prevent the abuse of smoking substances was more significant than controlling one. (P=۰/۰۰۱). Apparently, the reason why the authorities have not yet succeeded in preventing the smoking substances lies in the fact that they have fairly made use of controlling measures than educational one.
