چکیده مقاله:
All living things are made of cells, and each cell contains a molecule calledDNA. DNA carries the genetic information that determines gender, physicalappearance, vulnerability toward disease, and many other parts of who weare. Every cell in our body contains DNA. Even though cells can only beseen under a microscope, an uncoiled piece of DNA can be ۲.۸ inches (۷.۲centimeters) long. Each cell from inside your cheek contains millions ofDNA molecules. In order to harvest these cheek cells, you have to swishwith salt water and spit the solution into a cup. This solution will contain amixture of salt, water, and the cheek cells containing the DNA.This DNA is not soluble when alcohol and salt are present. Lab technicianscan add ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) so that the DNAclumps and form a visible white precipitate Plant and animal cells store theirDNA in the nucleus, a small compartment inside each cell that is surroundedand protected by the nuclear membrane (see Figure ۱ below). A membrane isa flexible, thin-film that only water and a few special chemicals can passthrough. The cell membrane surrounds and protects the entire cell. Addingdetergent or soap breaks the nuclear and cell membranes, releasing theDNA. Plant cells, but not animal cells, also have a rigid cell wall around theoutside of the cell. The students must smash the strawberry in the bag tobreak the cell walls and expose the membranes inside to the soap ordetergent. Once the DNA has been released, the meat tenderizer (orpineapple or papaya juice) helps untangle and unfold the DNA from theother parts of the cell. Explanation is that Animal DNA may separate morecleanly than plant DNA. Plant cells have cell walls, which can separate outin the solution and be visible as a third layer. Because animal cells lack cellwalls, this layer doesn’t appear.
