Thyroid Cancer in the Pediatric Population

The thyroid is a gland, which is located in front of the neck and it isresponsible for producing vital hormones which are relevant to growth andmetabolism. When the cells in the thyroid gland turn to abnormal cells orwhen they grow so rapidly without control, pediatric thyroid cancer, whichis also called thyroid carcinoma, happens. They both occur when the hormone-producingcells change abnormally. Another type is medullary thyroid carcinomawhich is rare and related to non-hormone-producing cells. The last type ofthyroid cancer is anaplastic thyroid cancer which is way rare and aggressiveand it is more seen in adults than children. When it comes to treatments,there are a couple of choices provided. For instance: ultrasound, fine needleaspiration, thyroid surgery, nuclear medicine imaging, and radioactiveiodine therapy to name.
