Epidemiological Study of Fatal Road Accidents in Eastern Iran in a FiveYear Period

Background and Objective: Road accidents are regarded as one of the most significant global health issues. In Iran, road accidents are the second-leading cause of death followed by cardiovascular diseases. Considering the significance of prevention at the primary level and focusing on maximum reduction in the number of deaths due to road accidents, the present study was conducted with the aim of the epidemiological assessment of deaths due to road accidents in Torbat Heydariyeh between ۲۰۱۳ and ۲۰۱۷".Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which information on fatal road accidents recorded in Forensic Medicine Organization of the city of Torbat Heydariyeh was collected from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۱۷. Excel software was used to analyze the data.Results:A total of ۳۱۱ fatal accidents have been reported in Torbat Heydariyeh from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۱۷. The mean age of the deceased was ۳۹.۵۵ ± ۲۲.۷۱. Men accounted for ۶۹% of deaths. Most of the road accidents occurred in ۲۰۱۶ with the percentage of ۲۴%: most of which happened in the sixth month with the percentage of ۱۳%. The majority of fatal accidents occurred in the third six hours of a day (between ۱۲ pm and ۶ pm). Head injury in road accidents was reported the main cause of death (۴۸%). ۱۳۰ of the dead were passengers (۴۲%). The most type of vehicle used by the road accident victims wes motorcycles (۲۵%), pedestrians (۱۸%).Conclusion:Since fatal road accidents impose direct and indirect costs on society, some intervention measures should be taken in Iran to promote public health and prevent theincreasing trend of accidents.
