Aloe vera and Cancer: A review study

Introduction and Aims: Aloe vera has long been known for its many therapeutic properties and has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. The aim of this review was to investigate the anticancer effects of aloe vera plant.Materials and Methods: In this review study, in order to obtain the data, search was done in databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus and PubMed by these keywords: aloe vera and cancer.Results: In most studies, results showed that aleo vera plant plays an important role in preventing cancer, suppressing apoptosis and strengthening the immune system. One study discusses the suppressive effect of this plant extract on liver and breast cancer cell growth (۳). In a research on mouse melanoma cells, the use of aloe vera prevented the cloning of melanoma cancer cells in this animal and in humans. In a study about (Aloe emodin induces G۲/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis via activation of caspase-۶ in human colon cancer cells), the aloe vera use increased the apoptotic activity of colon cancer cells . Research by Su et al,on head and neck cancer cells, aloe vera consumption did not contribute to these cancers treatment . Another study showed that long-term exposure to the plant's products could be one of the causes of cancer (۳).Result of the Çandöken indicated that aloe vera gel can enhance the immune system and had anticancer activity in mouse Conclusion: Consequently, according to the obtained data from different studies.the effects of aloe vera plant on the prevention and adjuvant treatment of cancers is evident.but more research in human need to confirm its protective effects in future.
