Deforestation and changes in land use in the Xingu River Watershed, Brazil

The Xingu River Watershed is one of the areas most affected by deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. Thus, the objective of the work was to evaluate deforestation rates and changes in land use and occupation in the Xingu River Watershed over ۳۰ years, from ۱۹۸۸ to ۲۰۱۸. The evaluation of changes in land use and occupation was made considering the years ۱۹۸۸, ۱۹۹۸, ۲۰۰۸, and ۲۰۱۸. The data on land use were obtained from the MapBiomas Project platform that contains the historical series of land use and occupation in the Brazilian territory. In the Xingu River Watershed between ۱۹۸۸ and ۲۰۱۸, an area of ۵۲,۲۵۸.۲۰ km۲ was deforested, which is equivalent to ۱۲.۰۶% of the Amazon Forest in the area. Deforestation in the Xingu River Watershed has caused several changes in land use and occupation, with a large increase in areas for agriculture and pasture. Despite the small reduction in deforestation rates in recent years, a large area of the Amazon Forest is still devastated annually, which requires government actions and public policies to end deforestation in the region.
