A side orifice is a flow diversion structure provided in one or both side walls of a channel to divert water from the main channel. It is widely used in irrigation and environmental engineering. Numerical studies related to the discharge characteristics of side orifices in open channels under free flow conditions have been presented in this paper. FLOW-۳D is an appropriate software to model the flow features around side weirs and orifices; in this research the flow features around the square side orifice in a circular main channel is simulated numerically. In the present study, the influence of different non-dimensional parameters on discharge coefficient of the side orifice is surveyed. Results shows the influence of Froude number (Fr) and the ratio of the side orifice length to the approaching flow water depth on discharge coefficient when other effective parameters were kept constant. By increasing the Froude number, the discharge coefficient of the side orifice will decrease. A new equation is presented to determine the discharge coefficient of side orifice in a circular open-channel. The maximum error of the equation to predict the training and validation data are ۱% and ۲% respectively
