Effect of Concurent Aerobic-Resistance Training on Galectin-۳ and N-terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure

Background and Aim: Patients with chronic heart failure have low functional capacity and biomarkers like Galectine-۳ and Nt-proBNP play an important role in identifying a patient with heart failure with pathophysiological changes in the ventricle. In addition to aerobic exercises, resistance exercises are considered as useful trainings for improving muscular fitness in patients with heart failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concurent aerobic-resistance exercise on galactin-۳ and NT-proBNP levels in patients with chronic heart failure class II and III. Materials and Methods: In this study, ۳۸ patients with heart failure with ventricular ejection fraction (EF≤ ۴۰%) for ۸ weeks participated in a concurrent aerobic and resistance training program. Galactin-۳ and NT-proBNP were measured before and after the training period. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version ۲۴ and significant level was considered as p <۰.۰۵. Results: The findings showed a significant decrease in Galactin-۳ and NT-proBNP in the experimental group (p = ۰.۰۱). Also, there was a significant difference between the groups in the post-test of NT-proBNP and galactin-۳ (p = ۰.۰۰). Conclusion: Decreased Galactin-۳ and NT-proBNP are associated with improving the condition of heart failure patients with the response of combined exercises.
