Frequency of hydatid cyst surgery in selected teaching hospitals in Khorramabad during the years ۱۳۹۰-۹۸

Introduction:Hydatid cyst is a common parasitic disease between humans and animals that is endemic in Iran.The liver is the most common organ involved and the lung is the second most affected organ.Considering that Lorestan province is a hyperandemic region for the disease and no information is available about the cases of hydatid cyst surgery,in this study we found the frequency of hydatid cyst surgeries during۲۰۱۱ in selected teaching hospital softhecity.Materials and Methods:In this study,the files of ۵۵ patients who underwent surgery during ۱۳۹۰-۹۸ and the pathology sheet attached to their file confirmed the existence of hydatid cyst. Demographic information of patients including age,sex, Involved organ,clinical signs, diagnosis method and location were extracted from patients' files and after entering in SPSS software,statistical analysis was performed.Results:Our study shows that the average age of patients is ۴۲.۳۲ years and the maximum age range is ۲۶-۵۰ years. The incidence of women(۶۱.۸%)is higher than men(۳۸.۲%)and urban dwellers(۶۳.۶%)are more than rural residents(۳۶.۴%).The most involved organ is the liver(۷۰.۹%) followed by the lungs and spleen(۲۵.۵% - ۳.۶%, respectively).Abdominal pain (۷۴.۳%) in patients with liver hydatid cyst, shortness of breath (۲۸.۵%)in patients with pulmonary hydatid cyst and in patients with splenic hydatid cyst, flank pain(۱۰۰%)as the most common clinical symptoms Have been described. The most common diagnostic method for liver hydatid cyst is ultrasound(۶۴.۱%)and for pulmonary hydatid cyst is CT scan (۹۲.۸%).Conclusion:Due to the indigenous nature of this disease in this region, public health education,especially in rural areas and to housewives is of particular importance.
