The effect of massage on quality of sleep in the hospitalized children and its relation to demographic information

Background: Sleep is critical to repairing and optimizing physiological and psychological function with the help of the endocrine system, nervous system and cardiovascular system, and it is undeniable that hospitalization impair the sleeping pattern in children.Objective: the primary aim of this study was to determine the effect of massage on quality of sleep in the hospitalized children by considering the demographic effect. Materials and Methods: This study was a prospective clinical trial. The study population was ۷۰ samples of ۴- to ۱۲-year-old hospitalized girls. Randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The research intervention was done through Swedish massage method. the data collection tools included demographic information, questionnaire of quality and sleep habits (CSHQ) of Owens, Spirito et al. (۲۰۰۰).Findings: according to the results, the massage therapy had a significant effect on all aspects of quality of sleep (sleep resistance, sleep onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, nocturnal awakenings, sleep-disordered breathing, daily drowsiness) except parasomnia. The data derived from demographic information, indicated that the children who were born in urban are in dimensions of sleep resistance and sleep onset delay showed better results. Children at age range of ۴-۶ years compare to the age range of ۷-۱۲ years, experienced less nocturnal awaking; also, in families with less children, the dimensions of sleep onset delay and sleep duration were much more improved. The only dimension affected by economic status of family was sleep duration.Conclusion: According to the results, it can be said that massage in hospitalized children can be an effective function in improving sleep and therefore it is recommended to pay attention to this issue in hospitalized children.
