Structural health monitoring has long been employed by engineers to prevent sudden failures that could occur as a result of not detecting small defects of the structure as early as possible. Among different proposed methods so far in this respect, damage detection using modal parameters of the structure has been more practical due to its convenient implementation in the form of a finite element model. Therefore, a novel damage identification approach is put forward in this paper by means of modal parameters of the structure with the aid of a meta-heuristic optimization- Harris Hawks Optimization. The suggested technique is capable of detecting both severity and location of all existing defects in the structure even in case measurement noise disturbs the process. More importantly, there is no need for complete modal information from all vibration modes of the structure, and only modal data from the first few vibrational modes are enough for a rather accurate estimation of the defects. A numerical study is conducted at the end of this paper to further validate the method, the results of which are indicative of the efficacy of the proposed approach.
