A Challenge in Building energy Labeling Systems

Reducing energy consumption and consequently GHG emissions is one of the major challenges facing almost all countries as they strive for sustainable development. Building rating schemes have been employed in many countries as a policy to promote energy efficient design and reduce energy consumption in the building sector. Such a program uses an index, based on which energy efficiency of a building is evaluated then buildinggets a label. However depending on the index used,a building might get a different label in different rating systems; this fact could result in theopposite of what is expected from the rating scheme. This paper explains the importance of building rating schemes in achieving the objectives of sustainable development, in particular reducing buildingenergy requirements, and shows how different indexes can result in different achievementsof the objectives of sustainable buildingdevelopment.
