The highly versatile role of linea r polyenes i n several im portant biological processes, such as vision, photosynthesis, and also their usefuln ess as comp utationally tractable mo dels for more complex chromophores, retinal and carotenoids ma ke them a s intriguing subject of experime ntal and theoretical in vestigations. Optical experiments have established that (all-trans-) li near polyen es with four or more c onjugated d ouble bonds have a dark ۲۱A state g between the ۱۱Ag gr ound state and dipole allowed ۱۱B excited state.
