In order to study the effects of silicate layers with a very high aspect ratio on morphology and mechanical properties in polymeric nanocomposites, high density polyethylene/organically modified fluoromica nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending method applying a twostep process. To improve the compatibility between non-polar matrix and hydrophilic nanofiller, three modified polyethylenes (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and two grades of high density polyethylenes grafted maleic anhydride) with different molar masses and polarities were examined as compatibilizers. Design Expert software was taken into account to investigate the influence of material variables (including clay content, compatibilizer type and content) on physical/mechanical properties of the prepared nanocomposites. The state of dispersion and microstructure of the nanocomposites were characterized by means of wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). In addition to morphology, mechanical properties were evaluated based on tensile properties. The tensile modulus indicates substantial improvement which was in accordance with morphological investigations
