چکیده مقاله:

Background: Colonoscopy screening can detect colon malignancies in the early stages and reduce mortality. Due to the pain of colonoscopy, often use sedatives and analgesics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of peppermint sweat on reducing pain and making the acceptable colonoscopy.Materials & Methods: We performed a double-blind clinical trial in individuals who were to undergo screening colonoscopy, so that the patients were divided into two groups. In the case group, ۲۵ cc of peppermint sweat was injected in the recto-sigmoid, hepatic flexion, splenic flexion and cecum areas, and in the control group, water was injected through the working canal. Subjects were compared of pain, spasm and ease of colonoscopy. Quality criteria for colonoscopy such as time to reach the cecum and total duration of colonoscopy were evaluated. Results: Comparison of pain between case and control groups showed a statistically significant difference (P = ۰.۰۰۱). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of severity of peristalsis (P = ۰.۲۸). The mean time to reach the cecal region was significantly less in the case group (P = ۰.۰۰۱). The mean total duration of the procedure was ۱۸.۰۱ ±۲.۸۲ minutes in the case group and ۲۰.۵۲ ±۳.۳ minutes in the control group, which was significantly lower in the case group (P = ۰.۰۰۱), due to better visualization of the bowel and reduce the pain of patients during colonoscopy Mean ADR was higher in the peppermint group as compared to the placebo group (۴۳.۸% vs. ۳۵.۵%; P = ۰.۵۶).Conclusion: Our study showed that peppermint sweat reduces patients' pain and duration of the procedure and facilitates colonoscopy and increases patient satisfaction
