This paper presents seismic criteria and methods for design of piping systems containing hazardous materials. These criteria and methods were developed as part of an NSF-sponsored study performed by Jack R. Benjamin and Associates, Inc. This study reviewed existing design codes and standards, and used the findings of this review to develop seismic criteria and a simplified design procedure for seismic bracing of hazardous-materials piping systems. The design methodology was evaluated by performing response spectrum analysis of steel and PVC piping systems for different bracing conditions and seismic environments
