PREDICTING MAIN DIRECTION OF SEISMIC GROUND MOTION AND ITS APPLICATION

Earthquakes directly reflect the present tectonic activities. Plate frame work and its kinetic characters are responsible for the behaviour of present tectonic stress field. Causative faults are the key factors of intraplate movement and the mutual transforming, adjusting and restricting of stress field, at the same time, are controlled by them. In this paper, the author illustrates some concrete earthquakes which show that seismic ground motion have an obviously dominant direction. Based on the strike, orientation and dip angle of the causative fault and its kinetic characters, the main direc-tion of seismic ground motion can be predicted, thus providing the basis of the forecast and prevention of earthquake hazards and antiseismic reinforce-ment
