Synthesis and characterization of modified nanodiamond with metal oxide and its application in MRI

The present study aims to use modified nanodiamonds to enhance image contrast and improve T۱ and T۲ weighted images in MRI simultaneously. First, the nanodiamonds were functionalized and then metal oxide from the lanthanide series was deposited, using chemical techniques. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by various methods including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The analysis confirmed that after modification of the nanodiamonds the morphology and size distribution of the nanodiamonds particles were not affected. After modification of the nanodiamonds with metal oxide from the lanthanum series, the as-prepared products were fixed in ۱% agarose gel, and their application as an MRI contrast agent was evaluated. It was seen that by using these products T۱ and T۲ decreased significantly.
