چکیده مقاله:

Colonization has been as inseparable part of history and literature in the last two centuries. The impact of colonization has been so vast that it seemed essential to study its cultural legacy. As a consequence, postcolonialism was shaped to analyze and object the baneful effects of colonialism on the people. One of its most crucial debates has been the issue of identity. Many critics and authors have tackled this issue and its consequences on the psyche and identity of the people. One of the most significant instances of such works is Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. Achebe has focused on the predicaments of the ‘Igbo’ people, and specifically its protagonist ‘Okonkwo,’ in the pre- and post-colonial era, and examined the factors which pave the way for the crisis of identity, with an unbiased narration. This paper attempts to explore the identity crisis and its factors in the characters of the novel in the light of postcolonial studies and theories of eminent theorists such as Bhabha and Fanon. The findings of the study can be summarized as proving Achebe’s attempt to revive the lost identity of African people, and that he has considered colonization as only one of the causes of identity crisis, alongside with former traumas and personal issues of the characters.
