چکیده مقاله:

These days, people are easily exposed and influenced by the discourse surrounding them through multimedia contents. This influence could be doubled when it comes from academic discourse. As a result, adopting a critical discourse analysis (CDA) perspective and using the hermeneutic method, this study went through thirty articles on feminist-related subjects with a focus on the concept of choice to investigate (۱) some cases in which feminist ideologies benefit women, (۲) whether women are misrepresented in the discourse of scholars, policymakers, or practitioners, and (۳) if the discourse under study targeted the ideology and choices of a particular group. Results revealed how agency and choice definitions and their availability to women would vary in different contexts. Results indicated that although feminism helped liberate women in some aspects, it was still an incomplete process that could be misused or misinterpreted easily. However, it seemed none of the articles under study tried to target the ideologies of its audience deliberately. Moreover, the results could be used to warn people about the possible different interpretations of utterances, and how a certain audience can attach meanings to a discourse that were not even intended, and, as a result, how the way language is used might turn the tables in favor of a certain group.
