Produced water is known as the largest constituent of oil and gas industry waste. It is important to findsome way to manage this large amount of waste. Produced water treatment consists of two main steps. Inthe first step, deoiling and removing suspended solids are taken place, and in the second step, desalinationis performed. One of the methods of produced water desalination is electrodialysis. In this paper,electrodialysis is used to deionize a sample of produced water from an unconventional oil resource, withlow TDS (۴۳۹۳ mg/L). To find out the influence of some operating factors on the performance ofelectrodialysis, Taguchi L۹ method of experiment design was used. Flow rate of the diluate stream,applied voltage, and the length of the process were chosen as the factors, and three levels were consideredfor each factor. After conducting all the ۹ experiments designed by Taguchi method, it was concludedthat on one hand, the length of the process and the applied voltage had direct relationships with thepercentage of separation, and on the other hand, there was an inverse relationship between flow rate of thediluate stream and the efficiency of electrodialysis. By analyzing 'signal to noise' ratio diagrams, it wasobserved that the length of the process had the most noticeable influence on the separation percentage,and the effect of flow rate on desalination was less than other factors.
