Experimental study of cyclic behavior of pipe damper and concentric pipe damper design and pipe damper in pipe based on the change of geometric form of pipe damper

Steel dampers, based on the plastic behavior of steel, have a high energy dissipation ability. Various types of this damper have been introduced in new decades, each with its unique properties and structure. In this article, the performance of pipe dampers under cyclic load was studied, and then to increase the ability of this kind of dampers in energy dissipation, two types of pipe dampers with modified geometric formation were investigated. The outcomes of the laboratory study revealed that pipe dampers have flexible behavior and have a high ability to dissipate energy. Kinematic hardening behavior and steady cyclic behavior were seen in the tested pipe dampers under shear cyclic loads. In the following of the examination, the design of concentric pipe dampers and pipe-in-pipe dampers was preferred. The finite element method and Abaqus software were adopted to study the behavior of the two intended dampers. The results of finite element analysis confirmed that concentric dampers and pipe -in- pipe ones improve the energy dissipation capability compared to simple pipe dampers by ۳.۴۱ and ۳.۲۱ times, each.
