Numerical study on the influence of micro pin-fin pattern on heat transfer and flow characteristics

In this research, the effects of micro pin-fin geometry shapes on the heat sink thermal performance is investigated using numerical simulation, Ansys-Fluentsoftware, and finite volume method. The thermalhydraulic performance of square, hexagonal, and elliptical micro pin-fin has been evaluated to achieve theoptimum cross-section. The Reynolds number was in the range of ۳۰۰-۹۰۰, and the ۵۰ ۲ / W cm heat flux was applied at the bottom surface of the heat sink. Deionized liquid water was selected for coolant to dissipate the generated heat. The present study's main novelty is detecting the recirculation zone, secondary flow generation and stagnation area around the pin-fins, which directly affects the heat sink's overall performance. An average Nusselt number of ۴۰ can be achieved by using the micro pin-fin patterns at high Reynolds numbers, which is remarkable in heat sinks.For example, the increase in average Nusselt number at constant Reynolds of ۹۰۰ for hexagonal and elliptical pin-fin geometries was ۲۵۳.۷۱% and ۲۴۲.۱۵% higher than straight microchannels, respectively. Periodic growth of the thermal boundary layers, maintaining flow in the developing regime and increasing the interaction between coolant and walls improve microchannels' performance.
