Vulnerability of older women in the family and related factors: A review study

Background: Due to the growing trend of the elderly population in the world, the study of the concerns of this group is one of the most important issues of health systems. Ignoring the elderly changes their lives in many ways. But despite the importance of this, few plans have been made by health systems to care for the elderly. Among them, older women are at higher risk due to their gender, so this study was conducted to review the articles on the prevalence and harmful factors to older women and their families.Methods: This study uses the keywords Older women-Inattention-Family-Older women status-Violence and searches in pub med - Scopus- Science Direct databases using Google Scholar and Worldcat search engines with related articles of the year Done from ۱۹۸۸ to ۲۰۲۰.Results: By reviewing ۶۱۱ articles in general, based on the inclusion criteria, ۴۵ articles were selected for the final review, of which ۳۲ were English and ۱۳ Persian, and research in ۴ main areas: family neglect of older women, family abuse of older women, Self -neglect in older women and a study of domestic violence in older women were studied and it was observed that the rate of neglect and abuse of older women is increasing and leads to many physical, mental and social problems in older women. Gender has also been found to affect the issue of self-neglect, along with mediating variables such as age. Sexual violence is more prevalent among older women, especially if they have risk factors, and there is a growing health problem around the world that needs to be further investigated. Domestic violence was seen to be equal among older men and women, but the rate of physical harm was higher among women.Conclusion: Neglecting older women is an important and investigable issue, which can be reduced by identifying and controlling risk factors. Because biological, social, familial, and psychological factors affect access to health services, the need for broader studies to identify older women and their causes is necessary, and given the lack of information on Regarding the degree of self- neglect and its comparison in the elderly men and women and the need for different studies, further research in these areas is recommended.
