Determination the risk factors in type ۲ diabetes patients: a case-control study

Introduction: diabetes is one of prevalent and dangerous disease which has long-term and harmful failures. Diabetes is ranked as the sixth leading cause of death, the main reason of blindness and the most important reason of end-stage renal disease. According to World Health Organization (WHO) report the prevalence of diabetes will reach to ۳۰۰ million case by ۲۰۲۵ year worldwide. Therefore, this study investigated related risk factors by comparing them in patients with type ۲ diabetes to non-diabetes cases .Materials and Methods: This was a case-report study investigated ۲۵۶۷ individuals who attended to Mashhad mosques by convenience sampling in two groups: diabetes ۲ patients and non-diabetic cases. Data was analyzed by SPSS v.۲۱ using T-test and Chi-square test, and logistic regression model by which p-value < ۰.۰۵ was considered statistically significant .Findings: according to this study findings, diabetes type ۲ prevalence is ۱۰% (n=۲۵۶), mean age was ۵۷.۲±۱۲.۳ in males and ۵۶.۲±۱۱.۵ in females. Independent t-test confirmed the positive significant relationship between the age, FBS, BMI and hypertension with type ۲ diabetes mellitus (T۲DM). (p=۰.۰۱۹) and FBS (۰.۰۰۱) with T۲DM. The family history of diabetes (B= ۱.۲۷۲, p= ۰.۰۰۱) and hypertension (B= ۰.۷۴۶, p= ۰.۰۱۵) were the strongest predictors of T۲DM .Conclusion: Exact and accurate screening the risk factors including FBS, BMI, history of diabetes in family, hypertension, smoking, gestation and abortion can be useful in preventing and controlling the progression of the disease.
