Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faultsthat cover at least ۹۰% of the country. The amount of damage and devastation depends on themagnitude of the earthquake, local geology and construction techniques. The application ofheavyweight architectural elements and their inefficient attachment to the structure is one of the maincauses of casualties in earthquakes and unexpected subsequences. The separation of the load-bearingand non-bearing elements not only increases the loads of building but also imposes an additional coston the employer. As soon as the earthquake strikes non-structural elements are removed from thestructure due to the different behavior of these elements and the lack of efficient incorporation.In this paper we studied the effects of earthquake on non-structural and architectural components.Then the role of these components on increasing the earthquake damage is identified. Finally, thebenefits of structural and architectural cohesion and the necessity of applying this method to increasethe seismic resistance of buildings are investigated.Studies indicated that many of the architectural elements are more prone to earthquake lateral forcesdue to their high mass. This vulnerability is exacerbated by the inadequate junction of these elementsto building structure. However, integration of architectural design with structural form not onlyincreases the seismic resistance of the building but also reduces the overall costs as well as enhancingthe life period of the building.
