In the present study, the desalination of saline waters through capacitive deionization (CDI) has been investigated. To do so, a specific CDI rod geometry setup was designed, fabricated, and utilized to carry out the CDI experiments for the desalination of 400 mL synthetic saline water. BET and BJH tests were taken from the carbon powder used in the electrodes. The results have shown that the powder possessed good features for efficient desalination. The CDI processes were conducted at three different charging voltages (i.e., 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 V) and three different initial salt concentrations (i.e., 5, 10, and 20 mM) in order to evaluate the effects of these factors on the salt removal efficiency. By performing the experiments, it was observed that under constant operating conditions (i.e., an applied voltage of 1.2 V and an initial salt concentration of 20 mM), the maximum salt adsorption capacity (mSAC) and salt removal efficiency were 3.96 mg/g and 52.5 %, respectively. The results of this study show that the CDI process by wire-shaped electrodes is a promising method for the desalination of waters with relatively low salinities.
