Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and destructive nerve disease that effects the central nervous system. This disease slows the transmission of nerve messages by damaging the myelin. Activation of the body's immune system against internal cells and inflammation causes this disease. Evidence suggests that some newer drugs and stem cell therapies have been effective in treating MS, but are not safe in the long run. This disease is more common in young adults. Free radicals are harmful molecules that cause oxidative reactions and damage the outer layer of the brain, spinal cord and cells of the body. There is now evidence that free radicals play a role in the spread of multiple sclerosis. Antioxidants are compounds that delay or inhibit oxidation. Thereare many types of antioxidants that can help keep your body healthy against free radicals. Recently, herbal remedies are a new and promising horizon for patients with MS. This article is presented in the form of several topics: Introduction to MS, free radicals and its negative effects on the body, antioxidants, vitamins and the effect of herbal medicine on MS
