Related Factors with Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke in Pregnant Women at Home

Background: The importance of fetus health in pregnant women is an important factorin understanding the risks of secondhand smoke. Therefore, this study focused onevaluating the exposure rate of secondhand smoke in pregnant women in house and theeffective factors.Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and a sample consisted of 255 pregnantwomen who visited the Isfahan’s health care center to receive health care during pregnancy. Aquestionnaire was designed to collect the data about Related Factors with Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke. The data was analyzed by SPSS 18, Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney test.Results: The husbands' age (p=0.041), education level of the smoking husbands (p = 0.005),the education level of pregnant women (p=0.002), employment status of men (p=0.010), andwomen's type of pregnancy (p=0.010) had significant association with the participants'exposure rate to smoke. In other words, older age of husbands, lower education levels of menand women, unwanted pregnancy, and unemployment of husbands caused more exposed tosmoke.Conclusions: Low levels of education in men and women, unemployment and higher age inmen, and unwanted pregnancy were considered as the health risk factors. Training programsshould be designed to educate the pregnant women and their husbands.
