چکیده مقاله:

Background: Infants' length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be affected by a variety of factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship the length of stay of infants with gender in the NICU section according to the different causes of hospitalization.Method: In this analytical cross-sectional study, after leaving out the incomplete files, 461 cases related to neonates admitted to the NICU of Al-Hadi Hospital in Shoushtar city in 1397 were examined and three variables of gender, length of stay and cause of hospitalization were extracted and recorded from each case. Existence of any three relevant variables in the file was the entry criterion and Absence the variables was the criterion for removing the files from our study. Finally, Data were analyzed using Statistical tests chi-square and T-test and SPSS.16 software.Finding: Of the 461 hospitalized infants, 283 (61%) were boys. Respiratory distress syndrome, premature birth and meconium aspiration were also major causes of neonatal hospitalization.on average, the length of stay in male infants was 5.21 ± 5.75 days and in female infants was 5.63 ± 6.75 days, At the level of 0.05, no significant relationship was found between the length of hospital stay and gender (p = 0.471). Also, the longest and shortest hospital stay in both sexes was obtained for the cause of premature birth and meconium aspiration, respectively. Conclusion: According to the findings, although the number of hospitalized male infants was higher, but due to various causes of hospitalization, no significant relationship was found between gender and length of stay in the NICU.
