The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) polymer additive on metal-oxide coatings. For this purpose, the ternary metal oxide coating containing Ti, Ru and Ir was developed using sol-gel method with different amounts of HPC polymer additive. To study the effect of polymer additive, lifetime of the coating, morphology, elemental and phase composition analysis were investigated using Accelerated Stability Test (AST), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), respectively.The results showed that the structure of the coating in all conditions is in the form of cracked so that in the absence of polymer additive, the average width of the crack is 848±48 nm, whereas adding HPC into the coating increases the cracks width. In addition, by an increase of the amount of HPC in the coating, surface fraction of the crack increased from 18.4% to 27.9%. It is also observed when no additive is used the life of the coating is approximately three times as much as when additive is used.
