The present study was an attempt to investigate the effect of watching English movies with subtitles on Iranian EFL learners’ idiomatic knowledge development. To this end, the researcher employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design. The participants were ۳۰ male and female learners who were studying English as a foreign language and participated in language learning through movies course. They were chosen conveniently based on their scores on Placement Test to ensure that they were homogeneous in terms of their level of language proficiency and were randomly assigned to two groups, one to watch the movies with English subtitles (N=۱۵) and the other with Persian subtitles (N=۱۵). At the beginning of the study, both groups received a teacher-made ۳۰-item multiple-choice pre-test, consisting of idiomatic expressions extracted randomly from the movie episodes. After ۱۵ sessions, a reliable post-test was administered to investigate the learners’ idiomatic knowledge development. The results were analyzed through SPSS ۲۶ software. The statistical analysis of the collected data showed that there was a significant difference between the English and Persian group scores which reveals that watching movies using Persian subtitles can facilitate the learning process and have a significant effect on EFL learners’ idiomatic development whose L۱ was Persian.
